All about the "Kerala Cycling Spice Trail: Hike and Bicycle"

Get ready for this fascinating journey as we paddle through swaying palm trees, fragrant smell of spices, diverse nature of backwaters, rivers, dams, and bounty of wildlife while we walk through jungles of Periyar. Let’s get ready to try traditional meals served on banana leaves, the famous dance of South India: Kathakali, cruising in backwaters and kayaking in the Periyar river. The most important let’s get ready for trekking above clouds: Meesapulimala. We spend one day living among clouds. A journey of a lifetime heart.

Awara Day 1: Kochi

All travelers will be picked up from Cochin Airport/railway and transferred to the hotel. Depending on the arrival the travelers can proceed for a sight-seeing tour around Fort Kochi. One cannot miss visiting the Chinese Fishing net of Cochin, St. Francis CSI Church which is one of the oldest European churches, where the famous explorer Vasco Da Gama was buried. At night all Awara travelers would gather together to meet and greet fellow travelers while we all enjoy the famous Kathakali Dance over dinner. Welcome aboard AWARAS!!

Awara Day 2: Kochi to Thattekad (3 hours/70 Km)

As we paddle towards Thattekad, we pass through Mattanchery to visit Jew Town and Dutch Palace with its beautiful mural paintings. We bike through lush green paddy fields, coconut, pineapple plantation, and the trail through the village leads us to Edamalayar forests and Thattekad forest rich in famed exotic bird species like a large falcon, grey jungle fowl, white-breasted water hen, hornbill, etc. On reaching Periyar River, we camp next to it overlooking the lowland forest of Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, a sight for eyes. After relaxing for an hour, we get ready to Kayak on banks of Periyar River passing through thick forests and spice growing plantation.

Awara Day 3: Thattekad to Munnar (3.5 hours/ 80 Km)

Munnar is one of the most scenic hill stations of Kerala with pristine views. Munnar is situated at a confluence of three mountain streams: Muthirapuzha, Nallathanni, and Kundala. The day is at leisure today to enjoy the beautiful views and café Munnar has to offer.

Awara Day 4 & 5: Meesapulimala Trek (4 Hours/ 8 Km)

Today we wake up early morning for Kerala cycling trip and to be driven to the base of the first hill, Rhodo Valley where the trek for Meesapulimala starts. While climbing up we pass through breath-taking views of grasslands, rainforests and red rhododendron trees. On reaching the top of the mountain, we will be cloud-kissed with mesmerizing views on all sides. Meesapulimala is surrounded by clouds from all sides and we get a picturesque view of Munnar and Surianelli towns. Let me tell you this, Meesapulimala is the second highest peak in western ghats.

Awara Day 6: Suruli Waterfalls to Periyar Tiger Reserve

As we descend from Meesapulimala we pass through Anayairankal lake. Please note: the beautiful purple Kurinji flower (Neelakurinji), blooms once every 12 years (the next would be happening in the year 2020) and of lucky, we would be able to sight them. On reaching the base of the first hill we will board our taxi’s and would be driven to Suruli waterfalls, one of the most beautiful waterfalls of Tamil falling from the height of 150 feet. We will continue our journey to Periyar Tiger Reserve crisscrossing through the green countryside of Kerala and on the other side, we see dry arid land of Tamil-Nadu. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax and enjoy Kumily Town.

Awara Day 7: Periyar Tiger Reserve to Vagamon (2 Hours/ 50Km)

Today is going to be a peaceful ride as we pass through the spice growing hamlets, tea estates and dense forest. We can top by at tea estates to shopping fresh tea for back home. Vagamon is known for scenic valleys with pine forests, mists, tea plantations, and waterfalls. Today is going to be a quiet retreat.

Awara Day 8: Vagamon to Alleppey

Kerala cycling: On our ride towards Alleppey, we pass through a rubber plantation. On reaching Alleppey, we would be transferred on a boat to enjoy on Vembanad Lake to enjoy festive lunch with nice music on the background as we sail through backwaters passing through villages. On can sit back and enjoy the scenery, reading books, listening to music, chit-chatting or can take steer in their hand and row the crew through vast stretches of blue waters. We stay over in the boat for the night gazing over million stars and cool coastal breeze.

Awara Day 9 & 10: Alleppey to Marari (2 Hour/ 30 Km)

Today we bicycle to worlds top 5 ‘HAMMOCK BEACH’ by National Geography survey. The beach is surrounded by Coconut palm trees and golden sand. The day is at leisure to enjoy the beach for swimming, sea surfing, parasailing, water skiing, and deep-sea fishing. Just sip on coconut water and enjoy the beach life. One can also take part in traditional coir-making units from coconut fibers. Marari beach also offers one of the best golden sunsets. On the last night of the trip, we gather around the beach for delicious dinner and say goodbye to fellow awara travelers with a promise to meet again on some other adventure.
