All about the "Scaling new heights in Sikkim: Varsey Trek, Rhododendron Trek"

This trek is for those who believe in paradise on this earth. For people who have dreamed of walking on beds of red and white rhododendron, who can imagine themselves surrounded by trees full of flowers like a scenery painted on a canvas.
This trek is going to be accompanied by an amazing painter who has been traveling and painting and all travellers joining the trip will take part in 1 Hour class of learning basics of painting and painting the sceneries they are traveling through. Let’s capture our memories different this time, instead of snaps, we put down our memories on Canvas while embracing the sweet memories of nature. So, bring your colors in this colourful trek. On fourth day of trek we are going to be at interesting spot: on left side will be Nepal and on right side will be India.

 

Please note: One hour of each day will be given to painting under guidance of a professional artist complimentary by Awara Feet. Let’s paint our canvas Rhododendron!!!

Awara Day 1: Bagdogra to Gangtok

All awara traveler will be transported from the Bagdogra airport/NJP railway to Gangtok. Gangtok has a nice café in the evening to explore and get indulge in musical nights hosted by café around. Travelers would be greeted with local chai while check-in to the hotel. All riders will be given bikes for trial and the rest of the day is at leisure. Sikkim is the second smallest state of India with spectacular mountain views. One can ride up to Enchey Gompa or explore around Tashi Peak for an amazing sunset view. Gangtok MG road looks the best at night when locals are jamming on the street, skating, dancing or just being at ease. Travelers will get to know other fellow travelers over dinner and we all raise a toast to upcoming trip together. Welcome aboard AWARAS!!

Awara Day 2: Gangtok to Rumtek

We start our day early morning to reach Rumtek. Rumtek has one of the oldest monasteries which holds the Losar festival every year. On our way to Rumtek, we stop by Bakthang and Butterfly waterfall. Today, we go around the Rumtek village and visit the Lepchas Tribe.

Awara Day 3: Rumtek to Temi-Tea Garden

Temi Tea Garden, as we drive through it, our lungs fill up with the aroma of organically made tea in long lush tea gardens. As far as your eyes would go, you would only see tea farms.  We also get a chance to visit the Temi Tea factory where the flavored tea is organically made by handpicked dried up fruits. Temi Tea is considered one of the best Tea of India and Asia, it is exported all over the world. I recommend everyone to take at least one packet back home. All awaras would be greeted by the cup of Temi Tea while entering the hotel.

Awara Day 4: Temi-Tea garden to Varsey

We start our trek from Damthang, crossing over spectacular views of Kanchenjunga peaks and rhododendron forests. We may see local people coming to the forest during this time of the season to worship and pray to mountain gods. We would be trekking very close to the Indo-Nepal border.

Trek Time: 4 Hours

Awara Day 5: Varsey

Today the day is at leisure to enjoy the Varsey valley. We witness the sunrise from one of the high-altitude peaks. During the day we enjoy sights of rhododendron forest and see a variety of exotic birds on the valley.

Awara Day 6: Varsey to Phur Chao Chu

Today we start our trek towards Sulphur water springs – Phur Chao Chu, on banks of river Rangeet. One can take a bath in hot water springs and relax oneself after the trek. During the late afternoon, we head towards Samphu – Ancient Holy Caves.

Trek Time: 2 Hours

Awara Day 7: Phur Chao Chu to Mirik

Mirik is a picturesque village with a huge lake where we would enjoy boating today. One can also try sports activities like horse-riding in Mirik. The day is at leisure to stroll across tea gardens, savor freshly collected tea by locals and get to know the traditional village life. We also visit the Buddhist monastery created by Bokar Rimpoche.  Today is going to be the last night of all Awara travelers together. Over dinner, we share our warm regards for each other and bid good-bye with a promise to meet again on some other adventure.

Awara Day 8: Mirik to Bagdogra

Varsey Trek will end today. We drive early morning for departure from Bagdogra Airport/railway. Have a good life ahead!

Things to keep in mind:

  • Money: Be sure to carry enough cash. Yuksom is a remote area and the ATMs are highly unreliable.
  • Clothing: Take good-quality trekking boots, sleeping bags, raincoat, and heavy woolen clothing. 
  • Ecological concerns: Polythene bags are banned in Sikkim. Cooperate with the authorities and dispose of all wastes in a proper place.
  • Permits: Everyone must register at the police station at Yuksom with a valid proof of identity. for foreigners, Separate trekking permits are also mandatory for foreigners. 
  • First-Aids: Diamox Tablets for altitude sickness, Bandages, Tylenol in case of headaches
  • Anyone ID proof/ passport (For Non-Indians)
  • Headlight/ Torch
  • Sunglasses: The sun is extremely strong sometimes
  • Accommodation: A single room or camp will be shared by 2 people each.
